While we’ve made the classifieds experience extremely easy at JunkDepot, users still need to take extra precautions while buying. While we would love to trust everyone, there seems to always be another taking advantage of that trust.

If you’ve paid for an item, make sure you have some sort of payment protection to fall back on. Credit card companies do offer some level of protection from fraud and are usually easy to work with. PayPal also offers some protection and has a section of their site dedicated to security. We do not recommend using money orders for transactions since they are the same as cash and are not protected. Also using Western Union to wire money is not a good idea.

To help make JunkDepot a better experience, we stress using RapLeaf Reputations. This system gives buyers and sellers a rating that anyone can use. If you’ve bought an item successfully or unsuccessfully, go to the users page on JunkDepot (the address is http://www.junkdepot.com/user/username), if you aren’t sure of the username, go to the item page where you contacted the seller and click his username at the top of the right column. On the left there is a large green badge like the one presented here. Click the “leave user feedback” link and fill out the form provided.

A simple logical way to avoid any problems is to review the sellers ad. A good listing on JunkDepot is a single item with a descriptive title with at least 2-3 images of that item to view. It’s best of the images are taken from the user and not a product shot off another website. This helps reassure the user does have that item. If the item is not the actual item, contact the user with a real image of the item so you know he/she actually is carrying the item. The body of the ad should be descriptive enough so you know exactly what you are getting, some users will list everything they are carrying which is very confusing and does not describe the item for sale, this is usually as a way to show a potential buyers vastness of products available. Also items which carry a price of $0 should be avoided. If you suspect a fraudulent ad, please use the “Report this listing” link on every ad on the right column.

If you are having problems with a user, please contact us with your information and the offending user. We do block problem accounts, but we cannot refund any lost funds.

To be noticed by your peers can be extremely satisfying and rewarding, and when that peer is Google - words cannot describe. Today Google posted JunkDepot as an example project using their API’s - in particular their GoogleBase data API page which highlights projects using their API, as well as recent posts from the GoogleBase Blog.

As you know, JunkDepot uses GoogleBase API to post your posted items here, onto GoogleBase which users can search from. This gives your products tons of exposure and traffic back into JunkDepot. What more can we ask for?

Photos, photos photos! Pictures are the number one way to get your item sold the fastest. Ebay charges .30 cents to show your image in it’s listings and only allows a single image to be hosted by ebay. JunkDepot allows you to upload up to 5 images to our server and your main image is automatically shown in our browse and search pages all for free!

With any post, the more images you offer the better, and JunkDepot makes it real easy to work with by allowing you a quick and painless method of uploading your images. Above is our upload form shown in Safari. The first photo uploaded is regarded as the main image and will be shown on your listing as the largest image, so keep this in mind when you start uploading images.

If you’ve accidentally uploaded an incorrect image, no worries just click delete below the image and >poof< it’s gone. When you have your images uplaoded and the rest of the listing filled out, click Add Listing below and you’re done. Easy as pie. Your listing is immediately posted to JunkDepot and ready to be viewed by the world.

We’ve pushed out some great new features tonight on JD. Most obvious and important is the addition of new categories. We created 4 new top-level groups for you to post your items: Home Goods (which was our original set of categories), Electronics which covers all of your audio/video phone related equiptment, computers - because we know you have some extra memory or cabling you’d love to sell off, and finally sporting goods when the wet suit just doesn’t fit anymore.

These extra new categories are going to help you find just the right category for your junk.

Another great feature we’ve setup is for all you bloggers out there. Each item now has a ‘Blog This’ button in the right column. Just click it, and copy the code then paste it in your blog. Since it’s just HTML you can style it with CSS to match your layout. Below is a classic Swiss Army available for anyone needing an extra knife in their back pocket.

I’ll be blogging about more items from here as they get posted. The more interesting, the better for sure. More updates to be coming soon, so check back here for details.
